   "Old Fields, New Plough: The Preservation of Northern Beaufort County's Rural Heritage" will be the topic of February's Dinner and a Lecture at the Verdier House, February 27^th at 5:30 p.m. A new look at historic structures and preservation issues that are often overlooked will be provided by Evan Thompson, executive director of the Preservation Society of Charleston and formerly executive director at Historic Beaufort Foundation.

   While there is widespread awareness of and desire to preserve Beaufort's historic residences and antebellum plantations, there's little recognition given to the rural resources characteristically associated with an agricultural economy, including truck farms, tenant farmer cottages, country stores and barns.

   Thompson, a scholar of Beaufort's architectural history, will bring an exceptional perspective to the issue and a challenge to the preservation community. He led HBF for six years, during 2004 to 2010. During that time he directed major initiatives to restore the Verdier House, the Smalls-Nash Cottage, the McGrath -Scheper House, the Sons of Beaufort Lodge and the Thomas Young House. Under his direction HBF was awarded a prestigious "Save America's Treasures Grant" to restore the Beaufort Arsenal which stabilized the damage from the 1886 earthquake and retrofitted it as an environmentally-friendly building.

   Since assuming the leadership of the country's oldest preservation group in Charleston, Thompson has led the charge to regulate the intrusion of the cruise line industry into Charleston's historic district. In 2011, he was the inaugural recipient of the American Express Aspire Award from the National Trust in Historic Preservation for emerging leaders in preservation.

   A wine and hors d'oeuvre reception begins at 5:30; the program is 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. Admission for members is $15/$25 per member/couple. Non-member admission is$20/$30 per person/couple.    The Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce will have its First Friday Networking Event on March 2, 2012 at Whale Branch Elementary School located at 15 Stuart Point Road, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. James J Davis Early Learning Center and Whale Branch Elementary Young Artist Showcase for 2012 will feature artwork from students in grades K-4. This showcase is presented in recognition of Youth Art Month.

   Housing Counselors will be in attendance to discuss the South Carolina Mortgage Help program that is designed to help homeowners who may be facing foreclosure.

6. March Tacky Run

   Marsh Tacky Run & Exhibition

   Coligny Beach--1 p.m.

   Last year more than 5,000 people attended this popular
   event on Coligny Beach. The event showcases the Marsh
   Tacky Horses that played an integral part in the survival
   of the Gullah people on Hilton Head Island. They were
   the workhorses, and were used for plowing and
   cultivating the fields, as well as transportation and
   sports. At Christmas time, the Gullah men would have a
   horse race to determine who had bragging rights for the
   best horse on the Island. It is with this spirit, that the
   Marsh Tacky Horse Run and Exhibition Event have been
   reinstated.

7. Beaufort Twilight Run & Oyster Roast

   The Beaufort Twilight Run is a running festival for all ages. This 4th Annual includes a chip-timed 5K with awards, a 5K Fun Walk, and of course the feature event - The Beaufort Twilight Run 8K: The Lowcountry's biggest 8K - chip-timed on a USATF sanctioned course with a $1500 cash purse awards for overall, masters, local & military winners as well as age group awards. As always, the evening will end with a Lowcountry Oyster Roast.

8. Artist Showcase 2012

   Artist Showcase 2012 hosted in historic downtown Beaufort, SC, is the 10th annual event open to the public to exhibit and to attend the celebration of local and visiting artists.

   Space is available for 20 artists with application due by April 1.Original and print work is welcomed in a range of media to include paintings, folk art, basket weaving and mixed media. The show is free to the public, and all work will be for sale.
   
   The objective of the show is to promote the arts as a viable and important economic contribution to life in the Lowcountry and to support emerging and professional artists in pursuing their artistic goals and developing their talents.
