Arts of Beaufort County

Performing and visual arts are central to the way of life in Beaufort County. Original folk art and a wide variety of media are represented heavily throughout the entire Lowcountry and the Beaufort County area. From nationally-known professional artists to self-taught folk artists creating primitive works, the offers are showcased in dozens of art galleries througout small towns and rural communities. Many artists host showings in galleries in their homes and invite guests to watch them work.

Enjoy acrylic, oil or watercolor painting; collage creations of metal, wood, paper or found materials; jewelry; basketweaving; gourd art; wood carving; metal sculpture; fabric creations such as quilting, sewing or weaving and almost any type of art the eye can imagine.

The heart and soul of the Lowcountry culture and the African American heritage are often portrayed in the art which represents lifestyles and memories carried through the generations along with the scenic beauty of the South Carolina coastal areas.
